  MACH 460 Sound System

Premium audio system available on select vehicles, it comes complete with AM/FM stereo cassette, four subwoofers, four midrange tweeters, and 460 watts of peak power.

  Mach MP3 Music System

The Mach MP3 Music System is primarily available as a factory-installed option and/or as a key standard feature on the 2002 Ranger, Mustang, Escape XLS Sport Package and Escape XLT Midnight Appearance Package. It is a full-featured AM/FM/CD player that can play MP3-formatted music (up to 253 songs or 10 hours) CD-Rs, CD-RWs and standard audio CDs and allows the user to dial up or down quickly to a favorite tune anywhere on the disc. It provides excellent radio and CD sound quality and allows quick access to any song on an MP3 CD.

  MACH® 460 Sound System

Premium audio system available on select vehicles which comes complete with AM/FM stereo cassette, four sub-woofers, four mid-range tweeters, and 460 watts of peak power.

  MacPherson Strut

A type of suspension layout in which a coil spring is positioned over a strut with fewer parts and less weight than conventional suspension systems. This layout is used on the front and rear suspensions of many passenger cars and on the front suspension of the Escape. (Refer to the Suspension Systems definitions for more details.)

  Main Bearings

The bearings in an engine block that support the crankshaft.

  Manual Transmission

A transmission in which the driver changes gears using a hand-operated gearshift and a foot-operated clutch.

  Mass Airflow Sensor

An engine system-monitoring feature that employs a hotwire-sensing device positioned between the air filter and the throttle body to measure the rate of airflow into the engine. This information is fed into the Electronic Engine Control system, which then automatically adjusts the fuel flow to provide more efficient combustion The mass airflow sensor provides precise air metering for better engine performance, greater fuel efficiency and reduced exhaust emissions

  Maximum Loaded Trailer Weight

This is the highest possible weight of a fully loaded trailer the vehicle can tow, based on a minimum towing vehicle GVW. It assumes a towing vehicle with any mandatory options, no cargo, and driver (150 pounds) only. Super Duty F-Series chassis cab models also assume a second-unit body weight of 1,000 lbs. Weight of additional options, passengers, cargo and hitch must be deducted from this weight.

  Mirror, Electrochromic Automatic Dimming

An automatically dimming mirror that adjusts to NIGHT mode when illuminated from the rear at a predetermined level and returns to DAY mode after illumination is reduced below threshold levels. Features Reverse-gear override when backing out of dark areas and replaces the conventional day/night inside rearview mirror.

  Mirrors, Dual Illuminated Visor/Vanity

Conveniently located on both passenger- and driver-side visors with mirrors that light up when the cover is opened.

  Mirrors, Dual Outside Power Remote-control

Dual outside mirrors with electric motor-driven power adjusters that are available on most models. The right mirror is convex for an enlarged field of vision to the rear.

  Mirrors, Heated Feature

Outside mirrors with a feature that includes a heating element that clears away frost and mist. These heating elements are activated whenever the electric rear-window defroster is turned on.

  Modular Engines

A family of engines that share engineering elements and manufacturing features, enabling the same basic design or components to be adapted for a variety of configurations (6-, 8- or 10-cylinder models) and applications.

  Molding, Bodyside Protection

A body component, generally made of a high-density plastic compound, that combines improved appearance with extra protection against the minor dings and dents that can occur in parking lots.

  Moonroof

See Sunroof.

  Mouseover

Positioning your cursor (via your computer’s mouse) over an item to see additional information that will appear at that point of “contact.”

  Moving a locked gearshift

Automatic transaxle vehicles are equipped with a shift-lock safety feature that prevents the gearshift from being moved out of Park without the brake pedal depressed. If you cannot move the gearshift out of Park with the brake pedal depressed:
1. Continue depressing the brake pedal, and remove the shift-lock override cap with a 2.5 cm (1 inch) or longer screwdriver
2. Insert the screwdriver into the shift-lock override opening and push down
3. Push and hold the thumb button
4. Move the gearshift
If it is necessary to use the above procedure to move the gearshift, it is possible that a fuse has blown and the vehicle’s brake lamps may not be operating properly
For Ford trucks, if the vehicle will not shift from Park with the brake pedal depressed:

  • Apply parking brake
  • Remove key
  • Insert key and rotate one position clockwise (ignition OFF)
  • Depress the brake pedal and shift to Neutral. (If the vehicle is shifted to Park, repeat the previous steps)
  • Start the vehicle.

  MSRP

Manufacturer’s Suggested Price. MSRPs do not include state and local taxes, license fees, or special items or services.

  Muffler

The component in an exhaust system that reduces noise. The muffler is attached to the exhaust pipe, which allows gases to expand and cool, and uses baffles or porous plates to reduce noise created by the exhaust.

  Multi-valve Engine Design

An engine design that uses more than one intake and/or exhaust valve per cylinder for increased engine breathing, resulting in increased horsepower and torque, especially at higher engine speeds. For example, a 16-valve, four-cylinder engine provides two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder.

  Multileaf Spring

A leaf spring with several leaves bundled together.

  Multilink Suspension

A rear suspension consisting of at least four links or arms and no struts. Multilink suspensions provide great flexibility for optimizing ride and handling because they assign specific wheel-locating duties to each link or element.
