  Illuminated Entry System

Provides convenience and security after dark. On some models, a lighted ring around each door-lock cylinder increases visibility to allow for easier key insertion. All interior courtesy lights illuminate and remain on for 20 seconds or until the ignition is turned on.

  Incomplete Vehicles

Light truck chassis and other light truck incomplete vehicles that are completed by subsequent manufacturers, such as motor homes, special delivery vans and other specialized vocational units Safety, emissions and noise compliance representations are included with all light truck incomplete vehicle products (such as Chassis Cab models and Cutaway Vans) manufactured by Ford Motor Company in the form of an Incomplete Vehicle Manual. Completed vehicles must be certified by the final manufacturer.

  Independent Suspension

Any suspension in which the movement, or angle, of a wheel is not directly affected any motion of the opposite wheel.

  Instrument Cluster, Electronic

The electronic instrument cluster consists of three electronic display areas:

  • Electronic VF (vacuum fluorescent) display, consisting of: speedometer, odometer, tachometer, fuel gauge and engine coolant temperature gauge
  • Fuel computer that calculates and displays: average fuel economy, distance to empty, fuel remaining and trip distance
  • System scanner that checks the following conditions: door ajar, headlamp out, rear lamp out, low washer fluid
  • Other features include English/metric conversion and an extended-range fuel gauge. Refer to individual vehicle sections for exact electronic instrument cluster layout.

  Intake Manifold

The passages that direct the intake air from the throttle body into the intake ports of the cylinder head.

  Intake Port

The passageway in the cylinder head leading from the intake manifold to the intake valve(s).

  Integrated Child-safety Seats

They fold out of a passenger seat to secure (with a combination of straps) children over one year old and weighing between 20 and 60 pounds.

  Intelligent 4WD (Escape/Escape Hybrid)

Intelligent 4WD functions by distributing power between front and rear wheels via an electronically controlled clutch. The system monitors conditions dozens of times a second, adjusting power to provide optimal traction and transparent operation.

Intelligent 4WD has no switch to change modes and no extra gear reduction. Customers experience excellent traction at all times with no binding in turns on any surface. It is generally similar to AWD, though tuned to take advantage of the off-road characteristics of an SUV.

Intelligent 4WD can handle practically any condition from dry pavement to severe winter weather to moderate off-roading.
